Perth Arena Wins National Award

BGC Construction was awarded the National Master Builders Association’s Best Public Building Award for the Perth Arena in a ceremony recently held in Canberra, against a field of strong contenders.

Since opening on November 10 last year, the iconic Perth landmark has divided community opinion on its design, however the venue has attracted some of show businesses biggest names, including Beyonce, Pink and Bon Jovi.

BGC Senior Contracts Manager Chris Spooner said that the project was one of the most challenging, yet rewarding ones that the company had been privileged enough to work on.

“This is the most complex building project undertaken in Perth. Due to its ‘fast-track’ delivery of design, BGC was required to plan on the run.  The design was so complex it could not – in certain places – be described on 2D drawings, and so we needed to rely on interrogating the 3D model

“BGC is no stranger to the construction of large scale sporting venues.  In the past, the company has undertaken the development of the State Athletics Centre and the State Basketball Centre, as well as the redevelopment of the Western Australian Cricket Association (the WACA) the the NIB Stadium.  But the fact that the Arena was constructed with little disruption despite the number of challenges and constraints, is testament to the commitment and dedication of the entire team, from the client, the subcontractors and BGC staff.

“BGC, in conjunction with the State Government of Western Australia, has presented the people of Western Australia with a venue which they can be proud of, and one which will attract an unprecedented level of quality entertainment and sporting events in the future,” he added.
